To navigate, you must know roughly where you stand relative to your designation, so you can head in the right direction. In locations where landmarks are not available to help navigate (in deserts, on seas), objects in the sky are the only reference points. While celestial objects move fairly predictably, and rough longitude is not too difficult to find, it is not a simple matter to determine latitude and precise positions. In this activity, students investigate the uses and advantages of modern GPS for navigation.

Students learn that math is important in navigation and engineering. They learn about triangles and how they can help determine distances. Ancient land and sea navigators started with the most basic of navigation equations (speed x time = distance). Today, navigational satellites use equations that take into account the relative effects of space and time. However, even these high-tech wonders cannot be built without pure and simple math concepts â basic geometry and trigonometry â that have been used for thousands of years.

The essays in this volume that pay tribute to an outstanding educator, Delsworth Harnish from McMaster University deal with the problems and prospects of fostering student-centred learning in a standards-based world through subversive teaching. The essays are riffs on a theme mooted by Postman and Weingartner in their now classic book “Teaching as a Subversive Activity” The contributions from retired professors, senior educators to younger active instructors, educational researchers, medical and graduate students who provide a broad spectrum of opinions on those contentious issues. Though much has changed since the heady sixties and the tensions of the Vietnam War when the book was published, much abides. The enemies within and without have taken newer guise, but the tensions remain—the desires of teachers to spark individuality and the demands of society to straitjacket them in the guise of promoting efficiency.

Through two lessons and their associated activities, students do the work of scientists by designing their own experiments to answer questions they generate. Through a simple activity involving surface tension, students learn what a hypothesis isâand isn'tâand why generating a hypothesis is an important aspect of the scientific method. In the second activity, with bubble gum to capture their interest, students learn to design and conduct controlled experiments to answer their own questions about the amounts of sugar (or artificial sweetener) in bubble or chewing gum.

Students learn about the basics of molecules and how they interact with each other. They learn about the idea of polar and non-polar molecules and how they act with other fluids and surfaces. Students acquire a conceptual understanding of surfactant molecules and how they work on a molecular level. They also learn of the importance of surfactants, such as soaps, and their use in everyday life. Through associated activities, students explore how surfactant molecules are able to bring together two substances that typically do not mix, such as oil and water. This lesson and its associated activities are easily scalable for grades 3-12.

“We feel like OER is normal enough in our system now, that enough faculty have heard about it and use it, that what they are asking of us is that we expand the policy framework in the institutions to support their usage of it.” In this segment, Jenkins and Sebastian, directors of educational technology efforts for the community college systems in Washington and Virginia, share their stories of building and implementing an OER infrastructure for faculty. Sebastian describes how Virginia has a centralized governance structure, led by a Chancellor and the State Board of Community Colleges. Jenkins explains that Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges helps organize and facilitate much of the system governance activities of the community college system, though it does so without exercising direct authority. The two share ways the system office promotes open initiatives in the colleges. Sebastian describes three primary strategies used to ...
