This course provides basic principles of print reading. Topics include line types, orthographic projects, dimensioning methods, etc. There is also a two week introduction to GD&T towards the end of the course. Describes how bales of fiber are opened, how the fibers are separated, and how they are blown through a pneumatic system into empty fabric cases to create cushions. Between Cutters, where the glass ribbon is cut into individual panes or "lights," and the Warehouse, where glass is stored for shipment, is the Cold End. Here, in three operations--setup, packing, and closing--product is packed in a manner that protects it for the remainder of its journey to the consumer. Stacking, packing, and wrapping are examined.

The emphasis is on quality control in this look at the operations of the Cutter Lab, which includes Inspection, X-Cutters, Y-Bridge, Score Runners & Lab. The Cutter Lab is the middle ground between the Hot End and the Cold End. It is where the glass ribbon is cut into panes/lights. It is also where continuous checks of glass thickness & clarity, and the "squareness" of cut panes, ensure high-quality finished products. Custom, off-line operations are also examined briefly.

The work of maintenance technicians in a glass-manufacturing operation varies greatly from one day to the next. They can be required to to troubleshoot, repair, fabricate, install or maintain anything in the plant. Skills needed can include PLC malfunction diagnosis, welding & metalworking, blueprint reading, recordkeeping, and application of safety & quality standards to the glass-making process.
