Student-Centered Learning: Subversive Teachers and Standardized Worlds
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

The essays in this volume that pay tribute to an outstanding educator, Delsworth Harnish from McMaster University deal with the problems and prospects of fostering student-centred learning in a standards-based world through subversive teaching. The essays are riffs on a theme mooted by Postman and Weingartner in their now classic book “Teaching as a Subversive Activity” The contributions from retired professors, senior educators to younger active instructors, educational researchers, medical and graduate students who provide a broad spectrum of opinions on those contentious issues. Though much has changed since the heady sixties and the tensions of the Vietnam War when the book was published, much abides. The enemies within and without have taken newer guise, but the tensions remain—the desires of teachers to spark individuality and the demands of society to straitjacket them in the guise of promoting efficiency.

From a classical to a contemporary understanding of learning, learning theory and how it is applied in school and work settings will be examined. Important issues, such as learning about, and from differences, learning for citizenship and moral development, knowing and learning, interdisciplinarity, and Indigenous pedagogy will also be discussed. We conclude with a discussion of measuring and assessing learning, along with the use of metaphors and images for organizational learning. Theories of Individual and Collective Learning will provide a concise framework to allow reflection on these timely educational topics. The philosophy presented here incorporates the idea of providing thoughtful educational content, without the financial burden of a for-profit textbook. The content provided in this resource will engage, enhance, and construct new and deep learning in cognitive skills and academic knowledge within the readers, forging a connection between learning theories and their application in modern learning organizations.

Using Game-Based Learning Online - A Cookbook of Recipes
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

Game-based learning is a teaching approach that uses different forms of games, and the strategies or mechanics associated with them, for educational purposes. It advocates a student-centred approach that allows learners to explore, fail and take up challenges in a safe environment. Game-based learning also supports students in autonomously exploring situations created by their professor. Additionally, games are likely to reinforce the students' commitment to the learning process. In an educational context, these characteristics and qualities can greatly enhance student engagement, motivation and learning. This collection of recipes has been created to present game-based strategies to make online learning more stimulating and engaging for students. In this cookbook, an interdisciplinary panel of experts offers recipes for integrating different types of game-based learning activities in the context of remote teaching. An overview of game-based learning strategies will be provided, including trivia games, escape games, co-operative games, crossword puzzles, and more.
