Art Appreciation and Research: Student Exercises

My Art Appreciation sections generally move from excercises in formal analysis, which is simpler (given that the primary tools students use are their eyes and brain) to an exploration of context and research, which is more complicated for many reasons. We do a final project that is more research-based and it is a struggle to get students to avoid chosing dubious internet sources. I'm hoping that finding ways to make OER available to students will be part of the solution. Any ideas for short excercises to make students aware of what soures are available to them and how to acess them?
