This is a collection of cumulative units of study for conventional errors common in student writing. Units are organized from most simple to most challenging.

Using a combination of the newest findings in hemispheric science, neuropsychology, and brain development, along with the long-established rhetorical algorithms for analyzing the structure of arguments, this course explores the boundaries of critical and creative thinking in pursuit of developing a clearer and more robust model for the construction and deconstruction of various forms of argument. A variety of "texts" are used to help students develop rhetorical analysis skills, critical thinking tools and a diverse, integrative apparatus for establishing the veracity of truth claims in both academic and cultural contexts.

In 2020, as devastating fires swept through the West Coast and Covid-19 was changing lives in every part of the world, the University of Oregon instituted the UO Environment Initiative to promote questions and responses to the environmental changes that have resulted in “dramatic ecological shifts to all our natural systems” (UO Office of the Provost). Along with its Center for Environmental Futures, the University is primed to act as a change agent in new faculty and student-led actions, discussions and research approaches to address the challenges of 2021 and beyond. This book aligns itself with values of conservation, preservation and increasing awareness about choices that will affect the Earth, and its goal is to engage students in inquiry to find questions and answers related to the places they know and love.

English 100 is designed to emphasize writing as a process of discovery and to give you many opportunities for the kind of practice that builds self-knowledge. Some of the readings you’ll do for this course will provide examples of effective writing. Others will focus on “writing practices” that provide ideas for approaching any writing project, though especially writing in this course. Invention, drafting, research, revision, and editing can be considered stages of the writing process, but this process is rarely linear. Most writers move between these stages as they discover new ideas and information, come up with fresh ways to say things, and adjust their lines of reasoning. You’ll move through this recursive process several times during the semester as you explore and develop ideas; sharpen and clarify descriptions, narratives, and arguments; and, finally, present your work in clear, organized, and effective ways.
